sanctions. the prime minister said that under the obama administration strong sanctions have been put into place, and to date they have worked affecting the economy of iran. he said they've not stopped in deterring the nuclear program that that country is pursuing. he spent much of the speech setting the stage, talking about iranian aggression saying this is what we've seen in iran where they've turned on their own people without a nuclear weapon. what can the world expect if iran is able to obtain a nuclear weapon? an interesting note. he said in his remarks the middle east, europe and america would not be safe. >> yes. this presupposes that iran is not a rational actor or is sometimes described as death call. it's not clear. we've gone through this. i don't know if you were in the late 1990s and early 2000s we went through the same rhetoric with north korea. it it was unthinkable. the world would go through no effort and they couldn't trust them with a bomb, south korea could be destroyed although the touch the button. president clinton said north korea will never use that bomb,

today at the u.n. as the obama administration explanation of the attack in benghazi continues to einvolve this morning. secretary of state hillary clinton suggesting in a gathering of world leaders that the attack was the work of an al qaeda affiliate. the secretary saying this. now with a larger safe haven and increased freedom to maneuver, terrorists are seeking to extend their reach and networks in multiple directions. they're working with other violent extremists to undermined the democratic transitions underway in north africa as we tragically saw in benghazi. that is the first time secretary clinton acknowledged al qaeda as possibly playing a role in that attack. we'll have more on that coming up. a group of senators are now demanding that susan rice, america's ambassador to the u.n., provide more answers what happened in benghazi. new hampshire senator, kelly ayotte one of those four senators who sent a scathing letter to ambassador susan rice, she will be here to tell us first-hand what that is all about. bill: meantime the violence in syria getting worse by the day. a pa

not learning. a good time line of the obama's administration evolving statements on libya from saying it wasn't planned to now acknowledging it was an act of terrorism. the most charitable explanation of these resolving statements is information the administration received has changed or wasn't complete or the most uncharitable is the white house was slow to admit it was terrorism due to the upcoming election and sending out u.n. ambassador susan rice to morning shows days after the attacks saying we do not have information at present that leads us to conclude that this was premeditated or preplanned. by the way, you have to wonder if obama wins re-election is rice's chances of being secretary of state are collateral damage from all of this simply because senate republicans may want someone to go after if they end up losing the big enchilada. >>> critics of the voter i.d. law will take the stand today to convince the judge that the provision is unworkable. they'll hear from witnesses who say the state hasn't adequately prepared the public for what's coming. pete williams is nbc
